On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses putting an end to over a century of homophobia in the medical field. This Thursday, is recognized by over 50 countries as the International Day Against Homophobia. It is a day to stand in solidarity with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans communities (LGBT) in opposition to homophobia and transphobia wherever it is found.

In order to recognize this day, ACCKWA (The AIDS Committee of Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo and Area) is encouraging all people to come together with family, friends and coworkers to observe a minute of silence for all  who have experienced homophobia , biphobia and transphobia.

Position Title: Board of Directors Member
Organization Name: AIDS Committee of Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo & Area   (ACCKWA)
Area of Interest: Boards/Committees, Leadership/Management
Position Description: ACCKWA responds to the changing needs of Waterloo Region   communities and individuals infected, affected, and at risk for HIV/AIDS  through the provision of prevention, education, advocacy and support programs   and services. We are looking for volunteers to join our Board of Directors.Requirements include solid communication skills, some knowledge   of Microsoft Office, ability to commit to regular Board meetings and  functions, support of the mission of ACCKWA and membership with ACCKWA.   Previous experience on a Board is an asset but is not a requirement.
Position Requirements: English Proficiency, Confidentiality, Specialized Training, Work   Without Supervision.
Training Details: Training will be provided by the Board on agency by-laws,   policies and procedures, meeting conduct, roles and responsibilities, and   Board orientation.Staff provide basic training in HIV 101, STIs, safe spaces, and harm reduction.
Time Commitment: Board of Directors meetings take place on the last Wednesday   evening of each month. Attendance in-person is required.
Duration: Commitment of at least 12 – 24 months is preferable.
Time Detail: Approximately 5 to 6 hours per month which includes ad hoc   activities, committee work, preparing for monthly Board meetings. One Board of Directors meeting per month (meetings are about 2 1/2 hours long).
Min Age: 18
Ideal for: Individuals who have an interest in community giving, fundraising, leadership development and networking. Also ideal for individuals who are passionate about HIV/AIDS awareness, education and   prevention.
Location: 2B – 625 King Street E, Kitchener, Ontario
Geographical: Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo
Transportation: On a bus route.
